Student Employment Program

Work-Study is a financial aid program that lets you earn money through part-time work. Awards are based on financial need, and funding is limited—so it’s first-come, first-served each year. Work-Study is not a grant—you must work to earn the funds. 

• Federal Work-Study (FWS): Funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Available to students who demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA®. 

• State Work-Study (SWS): Funded by Washington State. Available to eligible students who apply through the FAFSA® or WASFA. 

Work-Study Awards Are Limited 

Submit your FAFSA® or WASFA early each academic year to improve your chances of receiving a Work-Study award. Awards are first-come, first-served—don’t miss out! 

Some campus departments have their own student employment budgets and may hire students without a Work-Study award. These jobs are ideal for students who are not eligible for federal/state aid , in Running Start or international student programs.

If You Qualify for Financial Aid: 

1. Submit your FAFSA® or WASFA as early as possible. 
2. If offered a Work-Study award, you’ll receive an email invitation to Student Employment Orientation (check your ctcLink profile email and spam folder). 

If You Don’t Qualify for Financial Aid:

• You can still apply for department-funded jobs on campus. 
• Check the job posting details to see if a Work-Study award is required or not. 

All student employees must complete the Student Employment Orientation—regardless of your funding source – before working. 

This is a once-per-academic-year requirement to make sure you’re set up for success in your job.

• Non-Student Employment jobs from External Employers: Positions in a variety of industries that align with SFCC programs—great for building experience in your field of study.

Hiring a student employee doesn’t just help the student—it helps your department, too. Student employees bring fresh perspectives, campus connectivity, and valuable support to your daily operations. 

How to Get Started as a Supervisor 

1. Attend Supervisor Training (Annually): All student employment supervisors are required to complete Student Employment Supervisor Training once per academic year to stay up-to-date on policies, procedures, and compliance requirements. Training is offered on Canvas.
2. Submit a Job Posting: Connect with the Student Employment office to request a new position or update an existing job listing. Once your job is approved, it will be listed on College Central Network. 
3. Hire a Student Employee: After offering a position to a student, complete this “Offer a Job” form. Students cannot begin working until approved by the Student Employment Office. 
4. Train & Support Your Student Employee: Schedule an onboarding session for your new hire to introduce them to your department's expectations, work environment, and specific job duties. Set clear goals and provide ongoing feedback to support their professional growth.
