Two male english learners in the classroom

Great! We will find the right place in one of our English courses.

There are a few exceptions. We will explain those to you in person.

How Do I start?

The first step is to take a placement test to find out where you should begin your English language studies.

To make an appointment for an orientation and take a placement test, call 509-533-7221 or email ABEInquiry@scc.spokane.edu.

What should I bring to the test?

  • Photo ID – A driver’s license, state ID, passport, or national ID card.
(Don’t worry—we can still help you if you don’t have a photo ID.)
  • Social Security card (if you have one)
  • Green Card or I-94 (if you have one)

*We are not able to serve individuals with non-immigrant visas such as B1/B2 (tourist), J, or F (student) visas. Other visa restrictions may apply.

Classes

Academic Track Classes

The Academic Track is our core program. It is designed to build strong English language and academic skills for college and career success. At each level, there are two classes. One class is focused on writing and listening, and one is focused on reading and speaking. You will improve your grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and use active listening strategies to participate in class discussions and prepare for real-world use. You will also build your reading skills and understanding. Speaking practice includes group work, presentations, and classroom activities that help you improve your pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency. After passing both classes in ESL level 6, you will receive a graduation certificate and are prepared for college level classes.

Community & Career Track Classes

Community & Career Track classes are open-enrolled classes for students who join our program after the quarter has started. In these classes you will build functional English language skills for use in the community and workplace. At each level, there are two classes. One class is focused on speaking and listening and one is focused on reading and writing. Classes will teach language skills around topics such as housing, money, and employment. These classes accept new students throughout the quarter.
