FAQs

What does it cost?

Running Start tuition is paid by the state through the public school district up to a maximum of 15 credits, depending on the student's combined high school and college class load. The college credits must be 100 level or above (meaning the course number is 100 or above) in order to qualify for free tuition.

What are some of the benefits of Running Start?

  • You save thousands in tuition and reach educational goals sooner.

  • You take classes not offered at your high school.

  • You have more flexibility in choosing classes.

What are the challenges of Running Start?

  • College classes are taught at a faster pace than high school, often covering as much material in one quarter as most high school classes cover in one year.

  • Classes require more study time and homework than high school.

  • Grades become part of your permanent record at college and high school.

Is there an application deadline?

Apply early. Information about admission application deadlines is located in the Calendar. Running Start applications for the following quarters are processed during the indicated periods. To expedite the admissions process, and allow adequate time to deal with any complications, Running Start students are encouraged to apply by these recommended dates.

  • Fall quarter: January 1 through May 15

  • Winter quarter: September 1 through November 15

  • Spring quarter: November 15 through February 15

How do I know if I met the eligibility requirements?

Students registered in a Washington public school district are eligible for Running Start. Private and home- school students must register, but not necessarily attend, at the public school in the district where you live. You must be in 11th or 12th grade by the first quarter of Running Start.

Please visit our Getting Started section to find out more about eligibility requirements.

How many classes may I take?

Running Start students are limited to enrolling in 15 tuition-free credits per quarter. Academic classes are typically five credits each.

What are the state requirements?

Your high school counselor assists you in determining how the classes meet your high school graduation requirements. Each high school has a course equivalency guide that must be followed in order to meet graduation requirements.

When may I register for classes?

Register after you complete all the steps listed under Getting Started in this section. Steps include submitting an application, meeting eligibility requirements, submitting your enrollment verification form and attending a Running Start seminar. Once you have met all these steps, you may register for classes.

Can Running Start students get financial aid?

Running Start students do not qualify for federal and state aid. Tuition is being paid by the State of Washington. However, if a Running Start student has qualified for free and reduced lunch, they may have the mandatory fees not covered under the Running Start program waived.
