How Reserve items help your students

The purpose of the library course reserve is to allow students some access to course materials at no cost, to help ensure their success.  Many students don't get access to Financial Aid at the beginning of the term.  Placing your textbook on reserve helps keep your students from falling behind at the beginning of the term. Your materials can be returned to you at the end of the reserve period or you can donate them to the SFCC Library.  Just let us know your preference as you go through the process. 

Deciding a Loan Period

Typical time frame is a two to three hour in-library use only or one day out of house checkout, though you can request the loan period you feel is appropriate for your item.

How long will it take to Process?

Course Reserve requests should be submitted at least three weeks before the start of the quarter, longer if materials need to be purchased. Submissions will be processed as quickly as possible, but requests submitted less than three weeks in advance, may not be ready on the first day of the quarter. We look forward to helping you and your students.

How long do they stay on Reserve?

Because of copyright limitations, items are not kept on Reserve indefinitely. Each reserve item needs to be confirmed quarterly or annually (see SFCC Collection Development Policy, January ’23). Faculty will receive an email regarding their reserve books requesting if they want to continue to have their textbooks on the reserve shelf, returned to them, or they want to donate it to the library. If it is a library-owned book, it will be put in the general collection unless otherwise requested by faculty.
