Chemistry

If you like doing lab experiments and are strong in science and math, a degree in chemistry could be the right choice for you.

In this program, you’ll learn about matter and energy down to the molecular level. Courses build a solid foundation in general chemistry and develop your understanding of the scientific method of experimentation, observation and analysis of results. You’ll also gain hands-on experiences in the lab.

Often called the “central science,” a degree in chemistry is excellent preparation for careers in a variety of fields, such as pharmacy, environmental sciences, chemical engineering, biotechnology, nutrition, medicine, dentistry and others. This pre-major program prepares you to continue your education by transferring to a four-year college or university at a junior standing.

SFCC is a MESA College

SFCC offers extra support and career development to students pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math programs through MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement).

What You’ll Learn

  • Explain advantages and limitations of chemistry models used to predict natural phenomena
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze experimental data in a laboratory setting; then draw scientific conclusions
  • Communicate experimental results verbally, visually and/or in writing
  • Solve chemistry problems by working in diverse teams
  • Apply critical thinking methods to analyze scientific information
  • Conduct lab experiments following personal safety protocols and rules for safe/environmentally sound handling of chemicals

You and your advisor will use this program map as a starting point to create a personal education plan customized to your needs. No matter what level of math you’re starting with, we will support you along your journey. We meet you where you are and help you reach your goals. We have a place for you!
