Records Fall in Season Finale for Sasquatch Track

 

[SPOKANE, Wash.] In the final indoor track meet of the season for the Sasquatch track teams the assault on season and personal records continued at the Whitworth Invitational and Multi event February 10 and 11 at the Podium indoor track facility here in Spokane.

One of the strongest indoor track seasons in the last five years saw thirty-five track and field student athletes combine to set over sixty new bests for the year. The last meet of the indoor season was no exception as nineteen competitors’ reached their best marks of the year.

Leading the way for the men was once again Zach Merrifield running a season best twice in the same day. In the pre-lims of the 60 m sprint he ran a time of 7.12 his best so far this year. Less than an hour later he lowered that team leading mark by almost .10 with his fastest time of the year in 7.03 missing, out of the event final by just .01 to finish in ninth place overall. Zach has been Mr. Consistent for the spring crew throughout the season.

Once again, the pole vault crew had very strong event performances this past weekend. Jacob Erlandsen had one of the best jumps of his season setting a new best clearing 13’10. Close behind him and setting his best mark for the year was Rome Deakins with a jump of 12’10.25” The highest team finisher was Gavin Hoskinson the freshman from West Valley HS jumping just under his best for the year good enough for a second-place finish overall in the meet with a jump of 14’ 10 “. On the women’s side both Morgan Burt and Sierra Harden saw their best jump of the year. Burt reached a season best clearing 9’ 7” while Harden had a huge personal best by 7” clearing 9’ 1 “.

Also hitting their best marks for the year were Jacob Acton in the men’s shot-put throwing 34’ 8.25”, Dan Close also in the shot-put with a team leading throw of 42’ 3.25”, Isaiah Cunningham in the 60m sprint running 7.44 and in the 200 in a time of 23.95, Zach Kness in the 800 with a time of 2:02.10, Joel Martinez in the 1600 running 4:37.99, Max Richardson in the 400m running 52.58.

The men’s 4 x 400 relay made up of Michael Byers, Max Richmond, Joel Martinez and Dalton Wild recorded their best time of the year running 3:30.89.

On the women’s side throwers Sam Emigh had a huge personal best in the women’s twenty-pound weight throw, hitting a lifetime best of 42’ 8.25” and winning her flight. Faith Wersland also hit her season and lifetime best in the weight throw with a new best of 41’ .50”.

Others hitting their best marks of the year were Calli Short in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 30’ 3”, Liz Soto in the 200m sprint with a very fast time of 26.36, and Camille Ussher in the 800m with a very solid 2:26.36. The teams will now transition and prepare for the NWAC 2023 outdoor season which begins at the University of Puget Sound Ed Boitano Invitational on March 3-4 in Tacoma.
