A sociology professor from Highline College in Des Moines, Wash., will deliver this year’s MLK Day presentation at Spokane Community College from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in The Lair Auditorium (Building 6 Room 135). The event is free and open to the public.
“Bread and Circuses: Exploring the Legacy of the “Real” Martin Luther King Jr.” is the title of the presentation by Darryl Brice, Ph.D., and it explores why a myopic view of King has become the most popular and accepted version of the civil rights leader and what is omitted from most dialogues about King’s life and legacy.
Brice grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and earned a B.S. in Political Science and Justice Studies from Frostburg State University in Maryland. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Loyola University Chicago.
Brice is a tenured instructor of Sociology and Diversity and Globalism Studies at Highline College where he has taught since 2003. In 2008 he was named Faculty Member of the Year and in 2009 he was the recipient of the NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Development) Excellence Award. He recently won the 2018 Faculty and Staff of Color Conference Faculty Award of Excellence.
