The Spokane Falls Community College President Screening Committee has forwarded two finalists to Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) Chancellor Christine Johnson, announced Nancy Szofran, acting SFCC president.
The candidates are Darrell Cain, vice chancellor for student success at the Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana region, and Barbara Hanson, former CEO and chancellor of Louisiana Delta Community College. Hanson also is a finalist in the SCC presidential search process that is underway. Both candidates will be taking part in a full day of interviews and presentations at Spokane Falls Community College. The community is invited to take part in the public forums.
Johnson anticipates selecting a permanent president before the end of the academic year so that the person can begin the new position by July 1, 2018.
Open forums have been scheduled at SFCC for each candidate.

In addition to the forums, during their full-day visits, the candidates will participate in a series of separate meetings with campus and district leadership.

DARRELL CAIN has been serving as the central region vice chancellor for student success/student affairs at Ivy Tech since 2011. Ivy Tech is the only two-year college in the country that is s statewide system, serving 22,000 students in an eight-county area. In that role, Cain implemented a one-stop enrollment center, student success coaching model and two programs to provide support and mentoring to racially, socially and economically underserved student populations. Before that, Cain spent two years at two different colleges in the Dallas County Community College District as the associate vice president for instruction and the vice president for learning. From 2002 to 2008, he was the dean of academic affairs at Atlanta Technical College, in Georgia.
Cain earned a Ph.D. in education leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech University, a masters in student personnel administration in higher education at Ball State University in Indiana and a bachelor of arts degree in arts and humanities from Indiana University.
BARBARA HANSON served as the chancellor of Louisiana Delta Community College from 2013 to 2017 during which she led the complicated merger of eight formerly independent campuses while increasing enrollment and addressing a multi-million dollar deficit. Before that, Hanson spent nearly four years as the chief academic officer of San Jacinto College-Central in Pasadena, Texas. She also served as a vice president for instruction at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, North Carolina, and at North Idaho College. From 1997 to 2006, she was the Dean of Instruction at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Arizona.
Hanson earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University and a masters of arts in English as a Second Language and German Pedagogy and a masters of arts in German Literature from the University of Arizona. She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music and German from the University of Arizona.
